How to Choose the Right Indian Wedding Photographer in Melbourne

By Rattan  ·  Rav Cine Captures, Melbourne

Choosing your wedding photographer is one of the most important decisions you’ll make. The flowers will wilt, the cake will be eaten, the venue will be returned to its normal state — but your photos and films last forever.

After 7+ years in the industry and 150+ South Asian weddings, here’s my honest guide to choosing the right photographer for your Desi wedding in Melbourne.

    1. Look for Cultural Understanding — Not Just Technical Skill

Any technically competent photographer can take a nice photo. But photographing a Sikh, Hindu, or Muslim wedding requires something more: cultural literacy.

Ask yourself: Does this photographer know what a Laav is? Do they know when the Kanyadaan happens and why it’s important? Have they been to a Nikah before?

A photographer who understands the ceremonies won’t miss the moments that matter most — because they already know they’re coming.

    2. Review Their South Asian Wedding Portfolio Specifically

General wedding photography and Indian wedding photography are two very different skills. Look for:

    • Coverage of Haldi, Mehndi, Sangeet — not just the main ceremony
    • Low-light capabilities (many Gurdwara and Mandap ceremonies have challenging lighting)
    • Crowd and chaos management — Indian weddings have a lot of people
    • Emotional candid moments, not just posed shots

    3. Meet Them Before You Book

You will spend your entire wedding day with this person. Chemistry matters. Book a call or meeting and pay attention to:

    • Do they listen more than they talk?
    • Do they ask about your family, your traditions, your vision?
    • Do they feel like someone you’d be comfortable with on your most emotional day?

    4. Understand the Difference Between Packages

Be clear on what’s included. Ask about:

    • How many photographers? (For multi-event weddings, you need at least two)
    • How many hours of coverage?
    • What’s the turnaround time for photos and film?
    • What format are deliverables — USB, online gallery, both?
    • Do you own the rights to print your photos?

    5. Red Flags to Watch For

    • No published pricing — everyone’s budget deserves respect
    • Portfolio mostly from one wedding — inconsistency is a risk
    • Can’t answer cultural questions — they might not have covered many Indian weddings
    • Slow to respond before booking — communication will only get worse
    • No written contract — non-negotiable

    6. Think About the Long Term

Your grandchildren will one day look at these photos. Choose someone whose style feels timeless — not trendy. Heavy filters and over-editing look dated quickly. Documentary, emotion-led photography stands the test of time.

What to Ask When You Get in Touch

    • “Have you covered a [Hindu/Sikh/Muslim] wedding before?”
    • “Can I see a full wedding gallery — not just highlights?”
    • “How do you handle low-light ceremonies like an Anand Karaj or Nikah?”
    • “What happens if you’re ill on the day?”

We’re always happy to answer any of these. Get in touch and let’s have a real conversation about your day.
